Mary Mowen

I am Mary Mowen, freelance writer and editor, professional tutor, student of life and literature, poet, wife, mom, adoring grandmom, and all-around friend of writers.  My professional mission is to preserve and protect communication through the written word.  Literalists may stumble on the notion that language creates reality, so let me simply say that I believe language creates perceptions of reality; and nothing is more important than language to bridging the gap between our separate awarenesses.  Welcome to my NAIWE blog pages.  I look forward to serving you in the near future, or to just chatting here with fellow NAIWE members and potential clients.

 A good portion of my days is spent in the Writing Center at Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD, where I tutor all comers in the conventions of academic writing.  Frightened students may walk through our doors believing they would rather drink Clorox than write, but they leave us with a fresh perspective on producing academic essays, college and scholarship application letters and essays, abstracts, resumes and cover letters, scientific and technical reports, and more.  One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is getting to know students from other countries, a population that is rapidly growing at colleges and universities all over the United States.  It is a pleasure to talk with people from other cultural backgrounds, a feeling our students share whenever we take the time to engage them in this manner.  Not only do our services help native and non-native speakers of English improve their academic writing skills, our conversational exchanges are an eye-opener for all concerned, reinforcing  a sense of the traits and experiences shared by all people everywhere.

Writing is the only thing I’ve ever done that can make me forget to eat.  As an English major, I liked nothing better than to read books and to write about what I read.  I enjoy reading and writing poetry and participating in poetry workshops.  From childhood, I’ve been a reader and lover of books, especially books that open my eyes in some new, vital way.  Books have been my clearest windows on the world.
